Alrighty! It’s time for March Madness and there’s more than basketball happening in Austin during this month. It seems that there is so much to do and so little time, you’ll be pulled in a hundred different directions, so buckle your seatbelts and I’ll tell you about some of the activities to keep you busy until the middle of the month when South by Southwest takes over the town!

For all you Texans and wannabes, we’ll start with Texas Independence Day on March 2nd. There will be parades, a 5K race, a golf tournament, ceremonies, parties, and so much more. The festivities start on March 2nd with a Memorial Service for the Veterans of the Texas Revolution at the Texas State Cemetery. There’s a celebration at noon at the Capitol Rotunda and a student contest for school children to promote Texas history awareness. On March 6th, you can join the 5K Run, watch the Texas independence Day Parade and have tons of fun at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. Parking and admission is FREE so mosey down to the Bob Bullock and hear live music, get something to eat, and learn all about Texas history. There is an Alamo Remembrance Ceremony at noon on the Capitol grounds, and a golf tournament on the 8th. For more information, visit www.celebratetexas.org.

Thursday, March 4th is the First Thursday of March and we all know what that means. Yep, it’s time to grab your hat and boots and head down to South Congress Avenue for shopping, dining, and listening to live music. This event repeats itself every first Thursday of the month, so if you miss this one… there’s always another opportunity.

Friday, the 5th is the kickoff for the Star of Texas Fair & Rodeo and if you want some real honest to goodness Cowboy grub, take this opportunity to enjoy a full buffet with country and western music to match. The event is at Auditorium Shores and starts at 6:00 A.M. …yep, that’s in the MORNING! The fair and rodeo runs from March 12th through the 27th, so you can really get a taste of Texas during this wildly popular celebration of all things western. There are cook-off contests, rodeo events, auctions, dances, and plenty of fun for the entire family. Most events are at the Travis County Exposition Center so have those boots shined and ready to go!

Now on the weekend, there are so many more things to do, you’ll need to keep your PDA ready at all times. Besides the Texas Independence Day celebrations that we’ve already mentioned, you can join thousands of volunteers and help clean up Austin Parks at It’s My Park Day! One of my favorite events all year long is Explore UT! Often called the ‘biggest open house in Texas’ this gathering has over 800 events and programs open to the public. Everything from mariachi workshops to solar cars to dancing to free ice cream can be found at the University of Texas campus. It’s FREE and you can find out more at www.utexas.edu/events/exploreut. Finally, if you can squeeze it in, stop by the Sunshine Gardens at 45th and North Lamar and purchase your spring plants for the garden. With high quality seedlings and an array of varieties, you can get everything you need for your vegetable garden in one stop!

Sunday, the 7th is the annual Zilker Kite Flying Festival….so you don’t want to miss this one! This event is an Austin original and you’ll need to dust off that kite, grab a picnic or your pocketbook (there’s vendors for food if you forget to bring your own) and be at the Kite Fields around 10:00 a.m. There are free shuttles from State Garage E at 1604 Colorado Street and you can bring the whole family. With categories like the smallest kite, the largest kite, the most unusual kite, the steadiest kite and the strongest pulling kite, there’s bound to be something that works for you!

One last reminder is that Austin Restaurant Week continues through March 10th so while you’re out running all over town…and who has time to cook?… you can take advantage of some great places to dine for a fixed price. Good for you, good for the restaurants, and good for the Sustainable Food Center charity.

I’ll be back to tell you more about SXSW that starts on the 15th of March. Until then, try to get some rest and don’t forget to set your clocks to Spring Forward on Saturday night, the 14th!!!

Are you a business professional who plays music on the side? Do you want to have your chance to play in front of celebrity judges and your friends on the stage at Antone’s? Cirrus Logic and HEB present the third annual Corporate Battle of the Bands fundraiser and concert at Antone’s on Tuesday, April 20 6pm-midnight.

At a kickoff on February 25, Cirrus Logic CEO Jason Rhode and HEB Retail Operations Director Craig Riha challenged the business community to identify and support a band from their company.

This is one of the most fun events of the year and we hope you will join us! Prizes will be awarded for Grand Prize, Best Original Band, Best Cover Band and Fan Favorite. Grand Prize includes a day of recording time at Bismeaux Studio and four three day passes to the 2010 Austin City Limits festival. Special thanks to Antone’s, Bismeaux Productions, C3 Presents, Strait Music, and Affordable Sound for their support of the event.

This year’s judges include Andy Langer of KGSR and News8Austin, Matt Hickey of High Road Touring and Johnny Goudie, local musician. Mark your calendar for Tuesday, April 20, 2010! You will not want to miss this event!

HAAM Turns 5 Years Old

2010 marks HAAM’s fifth anniversary. To celebrate, we will be hosting a RockStar Brunch on Sunday, May 23 at Zilker Clubhouse from noon-2 pm. Mark your calendars!

Stay tuned for more information about special musical guests and ticket sales. Special thanks to our sponsors Batter Blaster, C3 Presents, RockStar Bagels, Tito’s Vodka, Twin Liquors, and Whole Foods Market.

2009 Annual Report Released

This week HAAM released its 2009 Annual Report, which shows, among other things, that more than 1,800 member-musicians, most 40 and younger, have been served; that more than 6,000 clinic and dental visits, hospital and hearing health services, mental-health sessions, and referrals were provided in 2009; and that the inspiration and hard work of HAAM founder and guiding light Robin R. Shivers, who passed away last year, will continue to fuel the organization.

HAAM Benefit Day

Whole Foods Market presents the fifth annual HAAM Benefit Day on Tuesday, September 21, 2010. HAAM Benefit Day is a day to celebrate Austin and the musicians that make us the Live Music Capital of the World. On HAAM Benefit Day businesses, large and small, agree to make a cash donation or give 5% of the day’s proceeds to HAAM. Musicians, most of whom are HAAM members, play throughout the city making this event a true celebration of musicians’ health.

Special thanks to 2010 Underwriters ThunderCloud Subs and South by Southwest. Together we are keeping live music in Austin alive and well!

Hear Project Success

260 HAAM member-musicians have participated in HEAR Project Clinics since the program’s inception in 2009. The HEAR Project educates, screens and fits musicians with custom ear plugs and is a partnership between HAAM and Estes Audiology. The program has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the musicians who have participated.

One musician wrote, “I’ve been exposing my most important musical asset (my ears) to excessive sound levels for years. I’m looking forward to keeping the remainder of my hearing intact. I hope starting musicians can take advantage of this program, so they can have good hearing for the entirety of their careers. Thank you.”

Special thanks to the audiology doctoral student interns of the University of Texas-Austin Audiology Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders who staff each of the clinics and to Austin Media Tech for donating the space for the clinics!

Good Eggs & HAAM News

Good Eggs & HAAM, a group of young professionals who support HAAM’s mission through awareness and fund raising, named their new co-chairs for 2010. Quinn Donahue, Jackie Rado and Clint Strait will serve as co-chairs and are currently planning the 2010 calendar of events for the group.

Good Eggs & HAAM had a successful first year! In January they culminated the year with a “holiday party in January” at the home of Bill and Ann Schneider. Ray Benson treated the guests to an intimate performance and the group presented the HAAM Board of Directors with a donation of $9,000! Thank you to all the Good Eggs for your generosity and support! The next Good Eggs & HAAM membership drive begins in March.!

Come Support HAAM at the Austin Outhouse Reunion

If you’ve lived in Austin long enough, you remember the old Austin Outhouse, a cozy, dark hole-in-the-wall at 35th and Guadalupe on the Drag. Like many of the old Austin nightclubs that have gone on to the happy hour in the sky (the One Knite, Soap Creek Saloon, Armadillo World Headquarters, etc.), former patrons of The Austin Outhouse Reunion have joined to celebrate a reunion with some of their favorite musicians. The event is April 9, 10, and 11 at Giddy Up’s (12010 Manchaca Rd.). The line up includes:

April 9 at 5pm: Poor Yorick, Lost John Casner, Herman The German, Jon Emery, Ray Holland and The RoadHouse Rockers, The Rhythm Rats, Mark Ambrose, Butch Hancock
April 10 at 2pm: Brooks Brannon, Sarah Elizabeth Campbell, Dane Paul, Mickey White, Mandy Mercier, Pat Mears, The Ramblers, Ky Hote, George Ensle, Ted Roddy, Butch Hancock
April 11 at 5pm: The Keepers, Calvin Russell, Leti De La Vega, Patty Finney, Ponty Bone and The Squeezetones, Gurf Morlix.
Proceeds will benefit HAAM.

Recent Grants to HAAM

Thank you to the Stephenson Pope Babcock Foundation for its recent grant to HAAM. This unique foundation was created in memory of Pope Babcock and supports programs that Pope would have appreciated and wanted to help. We are honored to be included in this year’s group of grantees.

Because of the Stephenson Pope Babcock Foundation’s generosity HAAM will continue to serve 1,000 low-income, working musicians in 2010. Many thanks!

The much anticipated and rarely seen occurred today and no one can really believe it! Yep, the once every 10 year event happened. It was quick and if you slept through the day or were stuck in an office, you may have missed it. But is was a wonderland of beauty and something I miss so much after years of living in Central Texas.

You see, I’m from North Central Texas, on a latitude equal to Fort Worth and Dallas, but closer to Lubbock…. so snow and winter sweaters were something that I grew up with. We had snow almost every Christmas, and plenty of times during the winter…and I loved making snowmen, having snowball fights and, my favorite, eating snow ice cream! If you haven’t had snow ice cream…you haven’t really enjoyed the full benefits of a fresh fallen snow event. So I’ll share my quick and easy recipe for the next time you’re in the right place at the right time.

Snow Ice Cream Recipe

1 cup Half & Half
½ cup sugar
1 t. vanilla extract
Dash of Salt
5 cups of fresh fallen snow ( Put a bowl out in the yard and let it fill, or make sure you have a few inches of snow on the ground before to gather what’s on top so you don’t get any grass or contaminants in it.)

Mix the ingredients quickly by hand and serve IMMEDIATELY!

Now, back to the momentous event at hand….

Snow at Pflugerville Park

I was out showing homes during the height of the falling snow and while my friend who was along for the home search had her doubts about braving the weather, I found it to be so exciting; it was like being back in my childhood. The flakes were so huge they looked more like snowballs falling from the sky! Seriously, the falling globs were the size of half-dollars and seemed to land on the ground with a tiny splat. Children stood outside on the sidewalks catching snow on their tongues, and adults stood by with cameras and helped make snowmen.

While Central Austin didn’t get as much snow as our neighbors in Georgetown or even North Austin, we had enough white stuff to cover the ground and stay put for several hours. And as I stood on the balcony of a new home in Mueller development in East Austin, I was amazed at the snow covered roof tops and the tranquility of this gentle dusting by huge globs of snow falling from the grey sky. It was a Norman Rockwell scene to be sure!

UT students build a snowman

If you’re new to Austin, you may not understand the excitement and pleasure we all derive from these infrequent events. Those of us who have lived here many years recount past snowfalls by the decade… the snow of 1984, or the big storm of 1989. There was even a snowfall in 1971 that I still remember. I was in college and during the very early morning hours when everyone was still sleeping and Austin was a much smaller city, my friends and I got in our cars and drove to Lamar Boulevard between 24th and 29th Streets and made snow doughnuts in the street. We’d get a little speed, throw on the brakes and squeal as the car did doughnuts in the early morning silence. The cars would spiral down the street and we’d laugh until it hurt. Of course, we weren’t going fast enough to jump a curb, so it was pretty harmless, but the police may have had a different idea if they’d happened by. I can tell this story now because I’m sure that the statute of limitations has long expired. In the past 20 years, there have been few snows to trigger any long term recollections…. We just don’t get that much….and this one probably won’t make the memory books. But we’ll take what we can get, and love every minute of it!

You might think that after two years of drought, Central Texas might not be able to grow a blade of grass, much less provide a bounty of organic vegetables, but down at Boggy Creek Farm at 3414 Lyons Road, you’ll find five acres are lush tilled soil, a charming old garage that has been converted into a farm stand and a historic home in East Austin that is one of the most active and productive plots in the entire area! This place is ‘hap-pen-ing’ and you most certainly should put it on your social calendar as well as your list of favorite grocery stops.

This Saturday, I boogied on down to Boggy Creek and purchased my weekly supply of fresh produce. While I was a little late in arriving (I showed up at 12 noon and the stand is only open until 1:00 p.m.), there were still piles of cauliflower, baskets of baby greens including spicy arugula (my favorite!), colorful carrots….both orange and maroon, kale and assorted greens, sweet potatoes and the usual dairy products of cheeses, raw milk, and fresh eggs. Oh, my… the bounty is just gorgeous and it makes you want to rush home and start cooking! Before you can say ‘chicken little’, I’d grabbed my canvas grocery bag and filled it with sweet potatoes, arugula, and some Pure Luck goat cheese. Found some radishes and hard squash to top off the basket and I was set for the week.

Now let me tell you something. If you haven’t been to Boggy Creek Farms in East Austin, you have no idea what you’re missing. I mean, not only can you get fresh produce that has been picked within hours of the time that you get it home to your kitchen, but it’s just simply fun to go visit the farm and see the 150 year old farm house while you sit and visit with Carol Ann (the owner) and her henhouse full of colorful chickens. The history of the farm house is a little vague in it’s earliest years of around 1838, but Carol Ann and her husband, Larry, have managed to piece together a fascinating history of early life in Austin and how the owners of this once 50-acre tract of farm land were instrumental in the formative years of our state capital.

Historic Boggy Creek Home

The house is built of cypress siding and held together with square nails. Built like an enclosed dog-trot, there’s a central hall flanked by two large rooms with two smaller rooms behind them. Each room has a fireplace and the original kitchen (which was once in a separate building) has been moved inside into the back of the central hall. My favorite part is the two rocking chairs that sit on the front porch of the Greek Revival style structure. If you want to feel like the landed gentleman of old Texas, sit and rock for a spell…. And watch the veggies grow right off the front porch!

The farm stand is open on Wednesday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Yep, you’ll need to get up early for the best pickin’s! Just be prepared for a tasty crop of whatever is producing, because this place prides itself on eating for the season. The only things you can buy that aren’t produced on the farm are bakery items from Sweetish Hill Bakery, bison from Thunder Heart, goat cheeses from Pure Luck and Wateroak Farms, Rainwater from Dripping Springs, and lamb from Twin Oaks Ranch in Dinero, Texas. Get everything you need in one stop, and take your time. Without having to go stand in line at a big box grocery, you can spend a few minutes visiting with Aunt Penny and Tootie J. Tootums, the queens of the henhouse!

The Hen House

If you’re looking for a special event and farm stands really wind your clock, then put Sunday, April 11, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on your calendar.. The East Austin Urban Farm Tour (EAUF) will feature tours of Springdale Farm, Rain Lily Farm, HausBar Farm, and Boggy Creek Farm. There are chef tastings & beverages at each farm. Ticket sales ($35 advance; $40 gate) benefit the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance. There are other events throughout the year so you may want to check the website for the next hoe-down….Ya’ll come!

Just checking the calendar and wanted to give you all some ideas about things to do in the month of February. Even though it’s still pretty brisk outside, we’re warming up for Spring and people are starting to move around in the out of doors!

This month, we’re starting out with the ever lovable Groundhog day on the 2nd. Rent the movie, “Groundhog Day” with Bill Murry, and cuddle on the couch with your sweetie or a big bowl of popcorn…or both! Then grab your coat and head over to South Austin for First Thursday on South Congress. If you haven’t been yet, there’s no time like the present to see what all the talk is about. You can hear music, dine and shop ’til you drop, or at least until 9 p.m., whichever comes first.

The Austin Marathon is on Valentine’s Day… go figure! Maybe there’s a connection here…running is good for your HEART?? This is the largest marathon of the year, so if you’re going to do it…this is the one to do! And if you’re not into running, then volunteer or cheer. Who said running can’t be fun!?!?

Oh, and don’t forget Mardi Gras on the 16th! We all know that Mardi Gras is celebrated the whole previous weekend, so head downtown for parades and parties and beads. You know where to go! And in this vein, we also have Carnaval Brasileiro. Yep, Brazil knows how to start out the lenten month, join the fun at the Palmer Events Center on Saturday, the 20th for live samba music, conga lines, and wild costumes! Again, this is something that you really need to experience at least once in your life. Don’t be inhibited, wear a costume, and get a designated driver.

Okay… if you’re still kicking around for somthing do after all this, then you’ll need to check back in another couple of weeks. This wears me out just thinking of how I’m giong to work this into my calendar.

See you on the streets, and I’ll be in touch with more February events!
